HANDLING THE POWERED PARACHUTE
Training from a Quaker State Powered Parachute Instructor is the recommended way to learn to fly the Powered Parachute. The following flight manual should be read thoroughly even though you have received flight training. This manual should be re-read entirely after the first 10 hours of flight and at yearly intervals.
If you wish to fly a Powered Parachute you must first learn how. Previous flight experience in other types of aircraft can actually work against you, particularly if you feel experience qualifies you to fly without learning.
You are going to be self-taught and you will be responsible for your own safety. Any indications that someone else will teach you and take care of you (such as the confident presence of a qualified instructor or the advice of this manual) are an illusion. An instructor can make it easier to teach yourself by helping with such things as crowd control, engine starting and objective commentary on your progress. Unfortunately an instructor cannot give you flight experience and that’s what you rally need to learn to fly. You’re on your own and nobody else can take over the controls and cover your mistakes. Your instructor can suggest what to do next but only you can decide if you’ll do it. Self discipline is very important. Remember, poor self discipline may lead to injury, broken parts, death, or all three. Take everything one step at a time.
For example, let’s say you’ve been taxiing for a while and have good ground control. You have this neat manual and a competent instructor and we both say its time to move on to the next step. Your instructor tells you to taxi at one quarter throttle until you reach flying speed and then shut off the engine as soon as the wheels leave the ground. Your engine is started and you are left alone on the runway. You are now in the position to try anything you please. You can follow your instructions, you can fly as high and as far as your fuel supply allows, or you can compromise and fly low and level until you run out of runway. Your safety and our reputations depend on what you decide to do and we can’t do a thing about it. Please follow these instructions precisely as they are written. Your safety depends on it. |
